Năng lượng sinh khối là năng lượng được tạo ra từ các vật chất nguồn gốc sinh học, chẳng hạn như cây cối tự nhiên, cây trồng công nghiệp, tảo và các loài thực vật khác, hoặc từ bã nông nghiệp, lâm nghiệp. Ngoài ra, chất thải từ các hoạt động của con người như từ quá trình sản xuất thức ăn nước uống, bùn/nước cống, phân bón, sản phẩm phụ gia (hữu cơ) công nghiệp và các thành phần hữu cơ của chất thải sinh hoạt cũng là nguyên liệu sản xuất cho ngành này.
