Than hoạt tính là một dạng của carbon được xử lý để có những lỗ rỗng bé thể tích nhỏ để tăng diện tích bề mặt cho dễ hấp phụ hoặc tăng cường phản ứng hóa học. Do mức độ vi mao quản cao, chỉ một gam than hoạt tính có diện tích bề mặt vượt quá 800 - 1000 m², được xác định bởi phương pháp hấp phụ khí. Một mức độ hoạt hóa đủ cho ứng dụng có ích có thể đạt được duy nhất từ diện tích bề mặt cao, hơn nữa, sự xử lý hóa học thường làm tăng tính chất hấp phụ. Than hoạt tính thường thu từ than củi và thỉnh thoảng là than sinh học. Những loại thu được từ than đá hay cốc thì được gọi là than đá hoạt tính hoặc cốc hoạt tính.
